9:05 pm - a new car feature?
|
i could be telling you about dan's wedding, or flameouts from both my fantasy basketball league playoffs (as well as the ncaa tournament pool), or my trip to hawaii next week.
instead, i will present a picture of a car seen at work the other day... note, this is where doctors, nurses, and staff park at the veteran affairs hospital:

yes, it really is what it looks like. some people like adding gps navigational systems to their cars, and others...

6:57 pm - great way to kill time and reminisce
|
|
thanks to hotclicks on cnnsi.com, i found this great website, which allows you to play many of the old nintendo system games online for free. i spent my time re-learning how to play double dribble. the game play isn't quite as slick as i remembered it to be, but hey, after years of nba street, how can it be?

|
things i've learned in the past month:
kara's cupcakes aren't as good as sprinkles, but are much better than citizen cupcakes if you don't care about tigers or lions, the sf zoo is a nice free way to spend a few hours i really like steak. prime rib is really good. wagyu beef is great! people in richmond like hooters, and they love the WWE i want to be a guitar hero the wii is still difficult to buy

6:44 pm - thanksgiving in LA
|
flew back to LA for thanksgiving. excellent times...
sharon and i went to, among other places, sprinkles for some pre-dinner dessert. while waiting in line, she saw brian grazer across the street dining at le pain quotidien.
who? i asked.
i googled him, and yes, he is hollywood. producer of some kickass shows, in fact.
when i flew back, guess who was on the cover in the in-flight entertainment guide? you got it:

5:19 pm - monkey business
|
today, i performed an EGD on a rhesus monkey!
i had heard that one of my attendings was going down to the research lab to scope the poor fella (the monkey was throwing up). so i ran down, cuz how often do you get to see a monkey get scoped? after i got my mask, gown, and gloves on, the nurses basically handed me the scope...
one of my co-fellows was a little late to the show, and when he walked in and saw me scoping the monkey, he just laughed.
no pictures available, though i convinced my attending to take a picture of me doing it.

9:51 pm - football madness!
|
yesterday was the first sunday i was able to watch football in peace.
last weekend, i was in philly for a conference. i learned that ben franklin was buried there.
the two weekends before that, i was on vacation in LA. revisited old haunts: california chicken cafe, newsroom cafe, sprinkles, the grove, asia de cuba, sweet lady jane, that karaoke place on sawtelle, pinkberry... i tried a new cupcake place called danties cupcakes. cupcakes with whipped cream centers. and dipped in chocolate ganache. super sweet... but i still prefer sprinkles.
before that, i was back in norcal for cam's wedding.
it's good to be back watching football though.
current mood: cheerful

8:47 pm - NFL baby!
|
it's opening night! for the NFL that is. it's been a long wait, but it's finally here!
this past labor day weekend, i was able to sneak out to the west coast. checked out strike, an impressive knock off of lucky strike, saw superbad for the 2nd time, and despite that still was able to spend quality time with the family and sharon.
mike was the first to see this game at the amc theater (he didn't play it though):

12:12 am - close call?
|
http://www.wric.com/Global/story.asp?S=6907924
here's an excerpt:
"According to fire officials, crews responded to an apartment building fire on Franklin Street near Belvidere around 2 a.m. Thursday. Crews on scene put out a small fire contained to one room, where a body was also found.
Richmond detectives have ruled the death as a homicide. The cause of the fire remains under investigation."
that's across the street from my new apartment complex. this morning, the one-way road was blocked by a fire engine. i had to drive down the wrong way of the road to get to work. i think the police were too distracted by the investigation to give me a ticket.

2:43 pm - busy july
|
it's been a busy month:
i went to my first party where the cops were called because of the noise. i happened to be the non-spanish-speaking/asian representative at the party. i hope i served that demographic well...
i moved down the block to a much nicer apartment. trouble-free HD, true A/C, washer/dryer in unit... i'm much happier.
i went to dc, meeting up with mike, sooyoun, and winston. watched the transformers, reacquainted myself with the cupcakes of love cafe, saw the constitution and declaration of independence, and experienced the crabs and crabcakes at Obrycki's.

the DC trip fueled my appetite for cupcakes (man i miss sprinkles). i just got back from the mixing bowl bakery. the cake and the frosting were both good, though not quite as good as sprinkles. the smothering of the frosting all over the cupcake was a different twist though...

12:07 am - dude, where's my pants?
|
i was in san francisco 2 weeks ago. quality time with sharon, saw knocked up twice, ate at fleur de lys (even though sharon and i were woefully underdressed), and discovered mitchell's ice cream. i gotta say, it was a good week.
today, not so good. during a liver biopsy, my attending splashed a patient's blood all over my pants. i knew that the patient did not have an infection, so i was like, whatever. when i walked over to the endoscopy suite (where i usually work during other rotations), the nurses there freaked out. they fetched brand spankin new scrubs for me and made me change out of the bloodied pants. hydrogen peroxide was applied, and a nurse took the pants into one of the procedure rooms for me to pick up later.
at the end of the day, i swung by the procedure rooms, and my pants were nowhere to be found! a cleaning lady was in the area, but she denied any knowledge of it. another day in my life in virginia...
here are some random pics from san francisco:

5:41 pm - drug reps galore
|
this past week, i was in DC for DDW (aka digestive diseases week)... 5 whole days devoted to talks, posters, and presentations regarding the liver, gut, pancreas, etc. pretty interesting stuff... for the first day and a half.
after that, i whored myself out to the drug reps. 3 free dinners at nice places: the caucus room, fogo de chao, and marcel's. the dinner at the caucus room was especially nice because we basically ordered whatever we wanted from the menu. oysters? no prob. fresh lobster? check. appetizers? please. steak with crab? of course. dessert medley? better believe it.
at the bottom level of the convention center, tons of drug/device reps had stations, where they were handing out free stuff. i got 3 jump drives, 2 usb expanders, tons of pens, a beach towels, a portable picnic mat, a couple of waterproof blankets. after an especially exhausting morning gathering free stuff, i layed out the picnic mat for a few of us to hang out... in one of the convention center hallways. of course, our acting department chair walked by and saw us. we tried to avoid eye contact...
all in all, an eventful, educational, and fruitful week.

11:56 pm - god save...
|
the queen of england was in richmond today. she apparently made her appearance in the capital building downtown. luckily, i was able to drive through downtown to work before the traffic mounted.
my fellowship coordinator said she saw the limo with the queen's hand waving to the crowd from her office window. i, from one of the hospital windows, only saw a caravan of cars with flashing sirens driving through the streets of downtown richmond.
i guess that'll be the closest i come to royalty.

9:08 am - another wedding
|
yesterday i attended another wedding and reception of a co-fellow, but this time i stayed in richmond. interesting notables:
to kill 4 hours in between the wedding and reception, the fellows went to a restaurant down in Cary Town, called Can Can. It served french-themed food, and i had flashbacks to last march. during the aforementioned 4 hours, a few of us watched a few minutes of Yo Momma. this episoded pitted the kids from orange county against those from echo park. judging from the early rounds, echo park had no competition. the dj was only playing "classic" wedding songs (eg brick house, celebration) until i requested ludacris. then the night got a little more flava. the fellow on call got really drunk. i was the only sober fellow there, so i took over call. as another fellow drove the drunk one home, i followed behind while driving the drunk fellow's car. just my luck, it was a stick shift. i didn't stall once during the drive! i did stall 4 times trying to park on the street in front of her house though. overheard at the wedding: "how old is she?" "which one?" "the one with the braces."

1:32 pm - carded for a coke
|
last night, i met up with some friends for dinner at bank. i got there a little late, and my friends were already at the bar, looking over the menu. since i was (and still am) on call, i sat down and ordered a coke. "sure. i'm gonna need to see your id." i thought i misheard, so i thought nothing of it. the bartender gave me my coke, and then repeated, "i need to see your id." my friends were just as confused as me, but we assumed it was cuz i was sitting next to my drinking friends.
i take a sip of my coke... and it tastes like a rum and coke! my other friends do a taste test, and they agreed with my assessment.
the incompetent bartender aside, the food there was good. i had duck breast served with mashed sweet potatoes. whatever herbs and spices the cook added to the meal was definitely tasty and satisfying.

12:42 am - champion!
|
for the second year in a row, flex power faced off against dunkin donuts for a fantasy basketball championship. and for the second year in a row, dunkin donuts prevailed! don't feel too bad for flex power. he finished 3rd place in our other league... the one with cash prizes for the top 3 finishers. i finished 5th in that one.
this was the first fantasy league where the #1 playoff seed (me) actually took home the championship. i've had my share of failures as the #1 seed, including the third basketball league i was in this season. i finished 3rd in that one.
yes, i know, i play too much fantasy sports.

11:08 pm - jerry.... jerry...
|
jerry seinfeld was in town on friday. he did his stand-up routine at the landmark theater, a venue within walking distance from my apartment complex. both he and his opening act (i don't remember his name) were funny, but very tame in language and content than say... chris rock. i'm still trying to figure out how richmond was able to book a big name like seinfeld (though i guess next month jaime foxx is coming to the landmark theater).

after the show, we strolled over to a local italian place, mama zu's. very good food... the first time i've ever tried osso bucco! it wasn't necessarily in the greatest part of town though (maybe it wasn't the brightest idea for us to walk back to the theater at midnight).

11:02 pm - another bachelor party
|
i've been on call this week. a great way to recover from flying to vegas this past weekend for my chief fellow's bachelor party.
among the publishable notables of the weekend:
gambling (roulette didn't pay this time around) bellagio buffet dinner at spago's night at pure and tangerine, where there are a lot of beautiful women (and a lot of not very beautiful women)
here's the mcv gi crew before the hangover:
current mood: drained
